Why I Collect Music?

Why I Collect Music?

To quote Yasiin Bey, who quoted Kurt Cobain, “There are only a few people who truly love music, and they are all musicians.” Music was always my first love, to be completely honest, from singing in my school’s and after-school program’s choir to learning the guitar in high school to picking up bass after I graduated. I’ve made music that’ll only touch my ears; that’s how sacred this shit is to me.

Now, since I pour a lot of my energy and ideas into fashion, I never felt like I had the time or the energy to sit down and craft music that’d be comfortable sharing with the world. So I cherish and appreciate it when a person is able not only to put immense energy into their music but also to share that storytelling experience with the world, and this is why I collect vinyls and CDs of my favorite artists.

My first piece of physical music media was a  Dreams and Nightmares CD my grandma bought for me from the neighbor’s bootlegger (I'm sorry, Meek, I didn't know any better).  I used to run that shit on my radio. Track 3, Young & Gettin was fav of that album, that and "Amen" with Drake, ngl I was there for the intro fr, singing that word for word. Drake's verse was always mid, even when I was 9

When I finally had money to comfortably spend on starting my collection, I got IGOR on vinyl. Besides it being sonically a masterpiece, it was also my personal soundtrack to a heartbreak I had experienced in high school, the first time a shawty cheated on me. Puppet hit hard fasho, lotta tears shed over that album. Also, I hope that girl does her taxes wrong, and the IRS comes after her… nah, lemme chill, that’s evil lol.

And I’ll never forget buying Björk’s Debut album on vinyl when I first got to London. It was at the Rough Trade off Brick Lane, no crazy obscure shop, although I def hit up a couple others. I remember geeking out when I saw it whilst shopping with the homie at the time. I tried to put her on to one of my favorite songs off that album Crying, I really love how (for lack of better words ) annoying the keys and synths are in comparison to how smoothly Bjork floats on top of everything. My homie wasn’t as enthusiastic about the track tho which had me feeling a way for sec because my brain in that moment couldn’t understand how a person could not like this song, but then she sent me a Portishead song I hadn’t listened to yet, and I forgot all about it.

I can talk about my collection of CDs and vinyls all day, so to eliminate that, I'll just list off my favorite albums I have physically to spare you the monologue

Donuts - J Dilla

Speakerboxx//The Love Below - Outkast

Watch The Throne- Jay Z and Kanye West

Blowout Comb- Digable Planets

Rick James- Street Songs

Untitled Unmastered - Kendrick Lamar

Gemini Rights- Steve Lacy

The Bootsy Collins Anthology - Bootsy Collins

Negro Swan- Blood Orange

I know I said I don't have it in me to put out music, but who knows? I ain't saying I got an album, but a mix.. maybe. For now, just follow my Apple. I feel like I make some cool playlists
